Fall Flowers and Foliage

Everyone’s favorite fall flowers are mums! Chrysanthemums bloom in almost every color imaginable, including all of the fiery hues of autumn like red, orange, yellow, gold, bronze, and copper. They’re in-season in the fall, too, which means potted varieties will continue to bloom well beyond Thanksgiving Day.

For fall displays, we also love kalanchoe, sunflowers, marigolds, goldenrod, and lantana. To create an interesting look with depth and bright colors, we recommend arranging a variety of blooming plants with lush, leafy green plants like croton and kale.

Pumpkins and Gourds

No autumn front porch display is complete with pumpkins and gourds, too! Gather up a variety of plump pops of color in a variety of shapes, hues, textures, and sizes to create visually dynamic groupings. With pumpkins, the possibilities are endless. You can simply place them along your steps, on either side of your door, or use them to line your entire walkway. To make them last the season, we recommend leaving them intact, instead of hollowing them out to celebrate Halloween.

For a playful vibe, paint your pumpkins with fun patterns, designs, or seasonal critters. You can spray them in metallic hues for a more elegant look or boldly paint your house numbers on a few. Stack them up and help guests find their way to your home.

Festive Front Door

The front door should be at the center of your design. Make it the focal point with a festive autumn wreath featuring flowers, fall foliage, and fun embellishments like miniature pumpkins, pinecones, berries, and ribbons. Get more creative by welcoming gifts with a freshly picked basket of hospitality. If your front door won’t accommodate hanging any decorations, highlight it with a seasonal garland draped above the frame.

Channel the spirit of harvest by creating an abundantly appointed autumn design on your front porch. Pile on the layers and mix in pumpkins, gourds, kale, crotons, chrysanthemums, cornstalks, bales of hale, scarecrows, and anything else that tickles your fall spirit. To keep it looking sophisticated and never messy, maintain balance on either side of your door by arranging items in a symmetrical fashion.

Autumn’s one of the coziest seasons, so we recommend postponing the storage of your outdoor furniture for just a little longer. Trade your summery pillows and cushions for warmer versions featuring plaid and other fall designs. Look for flannel and wool blankets to encourage snuggling with mugs of hot apple cider.
